Dogs are some of the nicest pets that an animal lover can have. But they are animals, and such, some have a temperament that can be unpredictable. Even if they are calm and gentle with their owners they may behave much differently near others. Pitbull terriers have a bad reputation for being mean dogs that bite. Many factors can contribute to this but the reality is that dogs, in general, are not born to be monsters. This includes Pitbulls. However, as a larger, very strong breed, this dog is often used for fighting because of their genetic makeup. Pitbull or any dog attacks can none-the-less be scary and very tragic. Animal attacks by these fast-moving, powerful animals can have repercussions including serious lacerations, concussions, bacterial infections, sprains, strains, permanent disfigurement, and scarring, etc. Not only doe these attacks cause physical bodily injuries, but they can also cause severe psychological harm. The United States report roughly 4.5 million dog bites every year from various breeds and 1 in 5 bites will become infected according to the CDC. Pitbull StatisticsDog bites can happen to anyone but children are more at risk. Young children should always be supervised with a dog in the home and especially outside of the home around dogs they don’t know. Children aren’t going to inherently know that they must ask before petting a dog, young ones won’t know that their erratic excited motions and noises can cause distress in a dog, nor do they know that what they consider playing with a dog could be antagonizing the animal. A study about pediatric dog bites looked at children 5 to 18 months of age and out of the 551 dog bite victims in this range, there were over 50% that were from pitbull terriers. Pitbulls lean and muscular build give them immense strength. When they bite the risk of more severe injuries is far higher than that of a smaller dog. If the dog has had a history of being bred for fighting or was abused, the devastating aftermath of an attack could even be deadly. Canine LegislationThere are over 1,000 cities throughout the country that have laws on the books regarding specific breeds of dogs that statistically show a higher risk of hazards to the public. Some pure-breds and mix-breeds are even banned because they are considered to be so dangerous. Military housing, for example, has over 300 locations that ban high-risk breeds including pit bulls.
